Some Covers For Friday Part VI

Well, it feels like ages since I've done a 'proper' covers only post. Let's get going...

Sons & Daughters -'Killer (Adamski/Seal cover).' mp3

Pet Shop Boys -'Always On My Mind (Elvis Presley cover).' mp3

Yo La Tengo -'Dreams (Fleetwood mac cover).' mp3

Tralala -'Never Understand (Jesus and Mary Chain cover).' mp3

Slowdive -Some Velvet Morning (Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra cover).' mp3

The Shins -'We Will Become Silhouettes (Postal Service cover).' mp3

BTW, two bits of info that may be of interest to you:

1) This afternoon I did a 'phone interview with James Allan of Glasvegas fame (see below) and will write that up a.s.a.p.

2) This afternoon I received an email from Colin at And Before The First Kiss, asking if I would like to be involved with another mp3 blog he is assembling called Fun and Heartbreak. Well, obviously, yes! I haven;t yet posted over there, but I will.

Watch this space...

Lucky you, this afternoon I frove my arse off at work :)
Cheers for the songs, I bought that last Sons & Daughters single twice for that Adamski cover.

If you're doing interviews with the likes of Glasvegas, then it's probably fair to say that your blog deserves a better visual interface than the standard BLOGGER format that's been kicking around since 2003. Way past time for an upgrade.

Re: Slowdive - when I mentioned a list of Creation bands I thought were pish (see previous comment) - you'll notice I didn't mention Slowdive - Slowdive were fucking great, although "Just For A Day" was a big disappointment, they went on to surprise, amuse and confound, like all good bands do (and should).

(btw the 'anonynmous' tag isn't on purpose - I tried to create a blogger account, it spacked out)

I respectfully and totally disagree... 'Just for a Day' set a benchmark for *that* sound that very few others have come close to meeting. The EPs were great but that album, and subsequent albums... in what way(s) did it disappoint you? (if I can ask that?)

Yes, Slowdive are very close to my old jaded heart so am genuinely interested in why it let you down!

PS, Ed - great range of covers, as ever. I do love these posts you do.

PPS, The classic design works, but, up to you... :)

I like 'Just For a Day' though my favourite shoegazing album would have to be MBV's Loveless followed by Ride's Nowhere.

Colin -glad you like the covers posts, will try and do more over the course of this weekend...

I can't get Slowdive to download, after trying for a day. Any advice? Others are great.

Thanks

Colin - good question - to me the Slowdive record sounded rushed, as if they hadn't had time to get their tunes together. I was hoping every track would be as good as what I'd heard on "Morningrise", but they weren't.

Having said that, I may be shooting my mouth off here. I haven't listened to that record in a long time. I've got a promo cd of it lying around somewhere. I'll dig it up and reassess it. If it still sounds weak, I'll happily sell it to you for £0.00 - dunno what the going rate is for prehistoric Creation promos, but it sounds like a fair price to me.

By the way - "Shoegaze" was a terrible name for what was to be an enduring musical movement. Shame on whatever NME staff writer it was who inflicted it on these bands.

Anyone remember Moose? They played one of the best live shows I've ever seen. Stick that in your shoe and gaze at it, NME writer!!

Shoegazing is called 'Dreampop' in America, which might suit Boo Radleys circa Everything's Alright Forever or Chapterhouse or Lush, but seems wrong for say Catherine Wheel or Curve (well, I saw them as part of the movement).

scene that celebrates itself, anyone?!

Eh... spolisport aleart.

The Sons & Daughters cover is dreadful. But then again, it's a truly appalling song to be begin with.

Erm, I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on that one! the original reminds me of being 13 (just before adolescence really kicked in and life got teenaged) and Sons & Daughters can do no wrong in my eyes, especially as I am about to see them for the eighth time, and they have the fabulous Black Kids in support.
