Is the world going to end, then, Sir?



One of the things about teaching is that you are simultaneously supposed to know everything, and suspected of knowing nothing. You are also expected to be morally perfect...and tolerant of the students clearly not being.

When you teach what is this week dubbed 'Religious Moral and Philosophical Studies' (and believe me, I come from the philosophy spectrum), you are also expected to know about what God thinks.

Now that the world is apparently going to end tomorrow, I thought this cheery number from 1982, by a band called Defuser, might be appropriate.

Do I think the world's going to end tomorrow? Well, if it doesn't, and your homework's not in Thursday morning, then it might...

I have to say that I will be very annoyed if the world ends tomorrow. I've also had this conversation with kids this week but as I'm a media teacher I can ignore the ethics of it all and just talk about how they might take photos or turn it into a computer game. Bonus points for not playing the obvious REM song.

We were doing pre-historic medicine this morning. In the middle of me going on about trephining a Year 10 girl announced 'we're all going to die!'. I thought it was a bit of an extreme reaction to my teaching, but there you go.

Oh, there's always funnily extreme reactions to teaching. But once in a while, you realise that you have had a positive effect. Just occasionally...
