Hooray - finally getting the recognition they deserve

Wow...it's like the eighties and the (early) nineties all over again. After a gap of about fifteen years, The Cure are back on the cover of NME! And they're going to get the Godlike Geniuses Award from the NME next year. It seems like a far cry from the days when the NME was either slagging them for being hasbeens or not writing about them at all...hopefully Echo and the Bunnymen will get their due next (perhaps to coincide with the 25th anniversary of Ocean Rain)

Their new album 4:13 Dream is fantastic, definitely a four an a half star album, IMHO.

And assuming this works, this will enable you to check out some of the tracks off the new album.

Enjoy, folks...

how long will this happiness last between them before it goes all Morrissey-like?

Actually, from where I was, I didn't know NME still existed till my drummer passed me a recent one. Fair enough since -as I blogged- I heard that Pluto is no longer a planet, 'Top of the Pops' isn't on telly anymore, and you can't get 'Smash Hits' magazine anymore. And thus I blogged this somewhere, about how it's weird because the copies I saw all eulogised The Replacements - who I BET didn't feature much when they actually existed.

Also, I feel sorry for their readers who fall most firmly into their target market (your students perhaps?) because I see the mags I saw were full of Metallica, Oasis and Rage Against The Machine. How old hat is that? Isn't it like having Status Quo on the cover in the mid-80s?

Rage Against is the most 'what-the-feck' for me too, especially since I was recently reminded of them when I accidentally-discovered quote from Zach de la Rocha who is/was from them: I was doing a search on the Malian singer and guitarist, Ali Farka Touré, to find out when his 'Savane' album came out and on Wikipedia I saw under "Cultural References" relating to Touré: 'In 2008, Zach de la Rocha's lyrics from "If You Fear Dying" on One Day as a Lion's debut album references Ali: "I'm in with the spirit of Ali Touré, as I target more heads than a priest on Ash Wednesday"'

What?

I am still puzzling over this. Am I missing something here? Did he just need a rhyme? Is it a ploy to get NME readers and the like to search out Malian music?

Anyway, now you mention it: I don't remember EVER seeing the Cure in any NME I ever saw. I used to read about them in Smash Hits and No.1 and Melody Maker and RM.... but gracious not NME. Was that always the way?

I always feel a kind of teenage joy when the new Cure album is out. I've always been happy for a new Jesus & Mary chain,a new Wedding Present,etc... but The Cure... It's always special.

Hmm; my heart wants to rejoice...but my head reminds me about their last five albums.

the new cure album sounds good, although don't post any songs off it for gods sake, i've already noticed a few peoples posts have dissapeared. bryan adams? i guess if you root around in the sewer long enough you'll find a diamond, that song has been covered by many fine bands in a more punk rawk fashion over the years, but it will never make up for that load of balls that was at number one for about a year
