Not all about Manchest-uh!

It's odd, the Fall are often seen as being quite Caustic-sounding (well, I suppose they are, at times) and always associated with Manchester.

But Mark E. Smith called Edinburgh his home for a time, around the time of Extricate, for reasons that even the re-issue notes don't seem to explain.

It did produce what is arguably the most summery-sounding hymn to my adopted home city, though, and the no.4 entry in 1991's Festive Fifty (or Phantom Fifty, if you prefer).

The Fall -'Edinburgh Man.' mp3

Still reckon you don't like the Fall?

I'm a Glesga man myself but a top tune by the most misunderstood band in the world.

Oh yes...even makes an ex-pat Weegie like myself nostalgic for Edinburgh.

To paraphrase JP, anybody who doesn't like the Fall is a dickhead.

Drew - indeed. And Mark E. Smith seems to be -shock horror! almost singing in tune on this one

David - Glasgow seems to have more songs written about it, for some reason. Possibly because most folk who live there are born there, whereas Edinburgh has many like me and Mrs. 17 Seconds who ended up staying here by chance, falling in love with the city and each other.

sig -inclines to agree, Steve, though the much-loved Mrs. 17 Seconds can't stand them.

Surely you don't need reissue notes to tell you that he left Manchester because of the whole Madchester scene at the time?

I know Smith grumbled that they were now seen as being a Salford band, 'as of january 1, 1990' and that 1989 had ben somewhat of an annus horribilis. He actually felt at home here, as the track shows...

A friend of mine is South African and he told everyone he was leaving edinburgh about 8 years ago he`s still in Edinburgh, ha

Yes, one of the most tuneful Fall songs ever, the sort that the non-Fall fan can like. When Shiftwork lp came out Peel got in big trouble with the record company for playing the entire lp on his show in 3-track chunks. The record was a real departure and I think he got excited lol

cheers Ed, keep up the good work

gdsgshg -Edinburgh holds onto all of us. For a city of 400,000 it is actually pretty cosmopolitan- and I think that's a good thing.

Hideous Replica -it does work, you just have to wait for me to press the accept button!

A.J. - ach, c'mon, big man, 'Saughton Here We Come' wouldn't have worked (unless there was an Edinburgh equivalent of Half man Half Biscuit -any takers?!) Oh Manchester, so much to answer for, indeed...
