Primal Scream- Velocity Girl and more!

Every record collector has a list of the records they are absolutely desperate to get above all others. Mine is just too long (and there are other factors like, y'know, eating, getting to work, clothes etc..) to reproduce here, but it includes the first four Orange Juice singles on Postcard, all The Cure stuff I still haven't got, and the first singles by both Primal Scream and the Jesus and Mary Chain.

However, one gap that was filled last year was the second Primal Scream single 'Crystal Crescent'/'Velocity Girl.' The latter opened the seminal c-86 tape (will have to post that here if anyone's interested...?), which made no.4 in the 1986 Festive Fifty, even though its' A-side wasn't included. The three tracks come to less than six minutes in total, but it is a peach of a single.

Primal Scream are still going strong over two decades later, with stylistic and personnel changes along the way, and these tracks are not possible to get, criminally IMHO. The third track here, Spirea-X, was the name of a later Primal Scream off-shoot.

Primal Scream -'Crystal Crescent.' mp3

Primal Scream -'Velocity Girl.' mp3

Primal Scream -'Spirea -X.' mp3

Anyway, hope you enjoy these...

May do one or two more ten tracks from Festive Fifties, as they seem to be popular with a lot of people! Might even include Safety Net, A.j, watch this space...

Likewise, a combined post - great tracks today.

What was the 1st Mary Chain single - my brother was really into them back in 1985 (I also got to listen to them as well) and he's got a few bits of vinyl somewhere...including, if I remember correctly, an NME free single from around 1985 - does anyone have any details?

The first one was Upside Down, with Never Understand second.

The free single had an alternate version of Some Candy Talking which many (including me) prefer to the official single, in fact in that year's Festive 50 Peel specifically played the NME version.

cheers, Craig

Grame, AJ & Craig -thanks for all your comments.

Have investigated the 7"s part of the record collection, I don't have the NME version of the JAMC track, though I DO have two Sounds' samplers with stuff circa 86/87, and an NME one that features the Smiths, Bronski Beat, Cocteau Twins and U2, so look forward to those sometime soon...

Velocity Girl is by far Primal Scream's best moment. I went up to Bobby in Radio City in Glasgow many years ago to tell him, he turned out to be an arrogant twat.

It's had a huge amount of downloads so far in the two days since I posted it, which I'm pleased about, as it is a legendary track that should be easier to get hold of.

As for Gillespie, the man has made some great records, but he does seem to do a hell of a lot of drugs, which can make some people painfully arrogant.

....and don't forget hymn from a village from James, not really indipop i guess but seminal nevertheless

Now THERE's an idea...

Now listen Ed......I'm really chuffed that you got your rare and desired single and all that....but you are simply not allowed to post Hymn From A Village...

At some point (and I will get round to it soon enough), all the tracks from Jim I and Jim II will be going up at my place.

And remember, if youignore this piece of advice, I'm from Glasgow and not afraid to use mindless violence....

I'm guessing this page is getting a lot of hits because of this month's Mojo, with it's top 50 indie feature. It reminded me that I didn't have Velocity Girl digitally, so thanks for the timely posting of these tracks.

Just want to say "nice one" - been looking for that track (velocity girl) for donkeys. Beer owed.
