Ravin' I'm raving

It seems pretty stupid, given that I wasn't too young to be part of it, that I missed out on a lot of dance culture. Silly me. In fact, I probably, like many indie kids, (and I mean that in the pre-Britpop sense of the phrase) was guilty of being snobby because it didn't have guitars in it. Oh, and because I really can't dance. The mad sweaty guy headbanging at the indie disco? That was your host. Working in a record shop changed a lot for me about what I listened to, and whilst an interest in 'dance/electronica' type stuff grew steadily throughout the nineties and noughties, it was my record shop clerk days that changed much of it for me.

XL Recordings on the other hand, seem to have come at it all from another direction, having started out putting out records by the likes of the Prodigy, SL2 and Kicks Like A Mule, but nowadays make records with the likes of Adele, the White Stripes and the Raconteurs, and for a time, Badly Drawn Boy. A recent compilation, The First Chapters collects much of this together. Now, while it took me years to 'get' The Prodigy, this was a track I loved at the time.

SL2 -'On A Ragga Tip (original 12" mix).'

This track was actually a hit several times for London-based producer Brian Dougans. I remember seeing this on Top of the pops, oddly enough.

Humanoid -'Stacker Humanoid (12" original).' mp3

I also am going to have to put my hand up at this point, and confess that it was only this evening I found out that Brian Dougans is part of Future Sound Of London. Oh well, at least I'm honest. And I've posted this before, but it is glorious. And this I did like at the time.

Future Sound Of London -'Papua New Guinea (7" original).' mp3

Enjoy...

I love two of these and loath the other, can you guess which.

I've just posted Orbital's last ever gig over on FiS...

...and while we're at it, no one should have to go through life without having experienced 'Energy Flash' by (Joey) Beltram.

Good post. The Weatherall mix of FSOL is fantastic. Long, but fantastic.

Ed, 90 percent of the house crowd couldn't dance if i remember rightly although the doves made you think you could.
I'm with Swiss Adam, the Weatherall mix is a belter, most of his mixes from 90 to 93 were.
Hated SL2 at the time, but like eddie tenpole on the previous post it made me smile today.
Cheers,
Drew

I agree with Drew, except Weatherall's output in the last 2 years has been phenomenal- Wrong Meeting, David Holmes remix out now, Primal Scream remix etc. SL2 sound better now than they did then. Which Doves are you refering to though? Sub sub Doves or half man half man disco biscuit? I remember the back room at Cream...thousands of shiny shirted scousers in teh front and a few pogoing Weatherall heads at the back having the time of their lives...sigh.

Nice one, Ed. The original 12 inch of FSOL is still up at TK, if anyone's interested in yet another version...

Drew -see latest post!

Swiss Adam - 'disco biscuits,' eh?! Never went to Cream...or Ministry...or the Hacienda...or indeed any legendary club. But I did hear Judge Jules DJ and he was fab. Still, I saw Radiohead at Glastonbury in 1997 (still reckoned by many to be the greatest gig EVER) and saw Jeff Buckley, so I guess I was doing a different part of the nineties then.

sig/Steve -sorry mate, i should have said. I will now: GO AND CHECK TEENAGE KICKS BLOG, IT'S ACE, AND THERE'S A FUTURE SOUND OF LONDON POST!!!

Talking about the disco biscuits.
Swiss Adam thanks for the tip re the mix of the David Holmes track, got both the wrong meetings and you are right, Get Out Of My Kingdom is one of the best tracks of the last couple of years.
My club was Slam at the Arches in Glasgow, good times, although missed quite a lot of guitar based music from about 90-94 and was not that keen on Britpop when that broke.

Talking About The Disco Biscuits would be a great name for something- album, blog, band. Hmmm. And Get Out Of My Kingdom is one of the best songs of the last 12 months. Just got Weatherall's remix of V V Brown's Crying Blood today- also great

Drew - hang on, YOU ran Slam?!?!

And I'm obviously going to have to investigate some of the Weatherall stuff, too...

No didn't run Slam, if only, just went there.

If you are going to investigate Weatherall a good place to start would be any early mix of the West Indian Company O Je Suis Seul and Big Hard Excellent Fish - Imperfect List (rimming Elvis).
