Love Vigilantes

John Peel with Laura Cantrell, one of his favourite people

Sometimes, there are some cover versions that completely revisit the original to such an extent it completely rewrites the song almost.

One of those is 'Love Vigilantes' by New Order, originally on their Lowlife album, and covered this year by Laura Cantrell on her latest album Trains And Boats And Planes. Eighties electro-indie goes new country? Don't knock it 'til you've heard it...

If you're going to cover it, you have to make it your own, as Mark E. Smith would probably say.

Totally. And it's a million times better than Orgy's take on 'Blue Monday' IMHO...

Love Vigilantes is one of my favourite New Order tracks and it is a good cover, however I think that she may have heard the version Iron & Wine did as it has a very similar mellow take on the tune.

Am going to have to put my hand up at this point and confess that I've not heard 'Iron and Wine's take on it, to the best of my knowledge, but I wouldn't mind hearing it. Really liked Iron and Wine's take on Postal Service's 'Such Great Heights' though...

There's a really lovely 'breathy' cover by Hungry Lucy, and a nice live one by voxtrot both of which I have and can send if you want a listen. Have you heard a live Jenny lewis version of Such Great Heights? Techinically kind of a mess but it just feels like one of those perfect 'I wish I'd been there' live moments.

If you could send those over, I would be eternally grateful!

Thanks in advance, Ed
