It's Friday night and all I wanna do...

... is sleep.

Well, here's three fantastic tracks. It must be thirty-somethingness, that I want to play these on a Friday night rather than going mad to someting er...faster and heavier.

(I'm not that middle-aged, though, I'd rather read The Wire than many of the other music magazines more obsessed with celebrity and/or the past).

Joanna Newsom -'The Book Of Right-On.' mp3

Kristin Hersh -'Your Ghost.' mp3

The Men They Couldn't Hang -'Green Fields Of France.' mp3 (Found the 12" single of this in a record shop in Edinburgh the other week, I was ecstatic).

There will be more to come this weekend, there's a lot to review still...

love TMTCH, seen em a few times and they're still going strong, though i think ironmasters, colours or the ghosts of cable street would be my choice of tuneage.
All i wanna do this weekend is get lightly toasted and eat, oh and possibly go on a killing spree at the big brother house

Only got into TMTCH this year, thanks to Steve at Teenage Kicks, my favourite blog ever. Found the first two albums, The Light Of A Thousand Candles and How Green Is The Valley in a secondhand shop in Glasgow. An excellent band, and the idiots who dismissed them as a second-rate Pogues knew nothing!

Have a good weekend!

I recall seeing them playing outside of Virgin Records on Princes' Street around 1986 - even got a photo of them kicking around somewhere.

Excellent back and great to see them get some recognition again

Has it ever crossed your mind that you dont have to review every single thing that is fired over to you???? There's no obligation put on you by the labels (well I hope there isn't....)

I was mentioning the amount of new reviews you do to Comrade Colin over a beer the other night.

He made the point that even the best of writers in the music papers over the years were never required to review any more than 2 or maybe 3 albums a week.....anymore would never have given them the time or energy to actually write.

Think about being a bit more selective.....it will become more of a joy and maybe feel less of a chore.

PS

I was also in that same second hand record shop this week.....

Hi JC,

Believe me, I don't review everything by any means, though as I also review for www.isthismusic.com it does get put on this blog beforehand. But yes, I take your point. I do try to thank people for stuff they have submitted, what is frustrating is when you get people who fire something over to you, free download only singles being a case in point, then ask you not to post it! It effectively means a link to their myspace and no feedback, which is probably not the best way for them to advertise...

Mind you, as 17 Seconds Records takes shape, (watch this space!) it will be intersting to see if I ever have a different side of the argument to put...

SW - frustrating when gigs are on late. Guess it's that thing about the whole rock'n'roll lifestyle, some of us have to get up early to pay the bills.

Hope plans for moving here are going well.

Aw shucks. I agree with your assessment of The Men, and I also think you put up the best selection of Christmas music last year. I also agree with JC...don't work too hard!!!

Glad you liked the Xmas music last year, It did generate a lot of feedback. I will try not to work too hard (ah, c'mon, you're a teacher, isn't it somehow endemic?!!)
