Arcade Fire covers bonanza!

Hello folks.

Mrs. 17 Seconds and I are now back from our holidays, so we are now back at 17. Seconds towers (many thanks to the legendary scots indie bassist who flatsat for us while we were away). Thanks also due to friend who lent me his laptop when on holiday so I could still post.

If there is one band alone who owe much of their success to word of mouth amongst bloggers, it's Arcade Fire, but blogs or no blogs, I like to think that they would have made it anyway, due to being pretty bloody brilliant.

Some Covers For Friday Part III

Hey, it's Friday, it's been a good week, and I'm in the mood for sharing so here are some fantastic covers for you all.

First up, I heard Camera Obscura doing this live earlier this year, and it blew me away. They really DO make this their own song.

Electric Light Orchestra are one of those bands that seem to be considered beyond naff, and yet...there's something quite nice about their songs in small doses. Or in this case, in the hands of the much-missed Delgados (RIP).

I know very little about this cover, exvcept that The archies were a TV show before I was born, and this was no.1 back in about 1969 -but it's kinda cool, and I'd love to know where I can hear Mary Lou Lord's cover of the Bevis Frond's Lights Are Changing, too.

You get to hear a lot of music when you write a blog. You also get the chance to hear a lot of stuff that you've been searching for for ages. These two songs were things I had put out pleas for-and ended up in my inbox extremely quickly. Thanks. These were originally recorded for an album for Northern Ireland called 'Peace Together' when the province was a lot more troubled. I love the Peter Gabriel original and also really like Pop Will Eat Itself's take on it (Gabriel's stuff with Genesis was mince though). While I quite like a lot of the Police's stuff (though their solo stuff leaves much to be desired in a certain case, Mr. Sumner) I was never a big fan of this song, until I heard Therapy? do it.

There are some great Arcade Fire covers dowing the rounds, I posted their version of Guns Of Brixton earlier this year. This is their take on Bowie's Five Years.

Morrissey was quite passionate about many bands over the years, and famously covered Suede's early b-side 'My Insatiable One' (again, if you know where I can get hold of this, please get in touch) before most people had even heard of Suede. He also bigged up James years before they broke big (although it's long been rumoured that 'We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful' was a dig at them). This song -the b-sde to his 'Pregnant For The Last Time' single -was a cover of a Bradford song.

Finally. This song (and if I really, really need to spell it out it's 'There Is A Light That Never Goes Out') is possibly my very favourite cover version ever. I've no idea what Morrissey -or indeed any of The Smiths think of it - but it's fab in my eyes (or should that be ears?)

I do love Bond films. Octopussy has not dated particularly well, but I do think the title song is underrated (and I would much rather Rita Coolidge singing this, than say Sheena Easton doing 'For Your Eyes Only' or Gladys Knight's Licence To Kill). Here Jarvis and co. work their usual magic.

Years ago, working in a record shop I was virtually sent to Coventry for a day for daring to ask 'What's wrong with Bruce Springsteen?' I stand by that comment, the man is a hero to many, and just as an articulate observer of American life as many rappers or Bob Dylan. And Damon Gough knows it too.

At fifteen I thought Prince was a genius, but I started to get the feeling throughout the nineties that his work was not as good as it had been. Then I came to Scotland, and amongst the hundreds of albums I have bought in second hand records shops here since I arrived are much of his output from 1980-1988. I've also realsied that Country music can be cool too. Here the two collide beautifully.

Having got into Sonic Youth at fourteen through Goo, I remember thinking that 'Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star' was a bit of a disappointment when I heard it, though the first single 'Bull In The Heather' was a gem. Here the Go! Team offer their take on it.

OK, so this track was a hit, and it did through an advertisement, but what the hell, it's beautiful, and a genuinely different version of the original by the Knife.

Excited about 2007's new albums yet?

...mmm, I am, with The View and The Good, The Bad and the Queen due to release their albums in the UK, and Bloc Party, the Shins, Arcade Fire and so many others...how the bloody hell am I supposed to save up the cash for all that lot? Starve?!

Anyway, to whet your appetite, Heather over at I am fuel, you are friends has posted the new Kaiser Chiefs track Ruby here, and the post also includes Martin Luther King Jr.'s I have a dream speech.

Meanwhile, The Torture Garden has a lot of Arcade Fire rarities, including covers of Maps by the Yeah Yeahs Yeahs, New Order's Age Of Consent and Bowie's Five Years.
